Delaware 250

Semiquincentennial

JOIN US ON JAN 30TH AND KICK OFF AMERICA 250!

Come out and celebrate with GHHS! We will be hosting a special event that will highlight the former St Stephen’s Episcopal Church. The church first opened its doors on January 30, 1876. We will also tell the story of Francis Asbury, Judge Thomas White, their persecution as Methodist in Colonial America, and the story of Whites Chapel. Both these events will begin our celebration of Delaware 250 and America 250. The event will kick off at 6pm, with a community choir performance at 7pm

Now that’s a mouthful! How about we say HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!

On July 4th, 2026, America will celebrate 250 years of independence.

To quote Rosie Rios, Chair, US Semiquincentennial Commission

“America’s 250th anniversary is about more than reflecting on our past, it’s about honoring the contributions of individuals who built this country, the innovations that put this country on the map and a man on the moon, and imagining what the next 250 years might look like for our children and the generations to come.”

Taken from the Delaware 250th website:

This story begins millennia before 1776 and continues to the present day. Over a long history—from the earliest inhabitants of the land, through the development of the Atlantic colonies, to the Declaration of Independence, over the course of the American Revolution and to the ratification of the Constitution of the United States—the peoples of the land now called Delaware helped shape a country that has continued for two and a half centuries. Although this anniversary is rooted in early American military history, this moment in time allows us to reflect upon and celebrate the plurality of histories within both the Nation and State.

Here locally at GHHS, our first event, Two Lights for Tomorrow was a great success.

Our next event is planned for Friday, January 30th, 2026. We will be celebrating the former St Stephens church as it turns 150 years old! We will have refreshments, tours and a special display of artifacts from the church.

We are planning to have several events as we countdown to July 4, 2026. Stop back to our webpage and checkout Facebook for all the latest news!
